Using appropriate, adventure-based activities as a means to human growth and development has become an increasingly useful methodology in human service fields. Participants are encouraged to participate in adventure-based learning experiences, potentially leading to group and personal growth. Opportunities for reflective processing throughout the experiences are offered to provide insightful learning that can be applied to everyday life far beyond the activities themselves. Reasonably safe programming consistent with currently accepted practices is provided in an effort to promote positive growth experiences for all who are served. An approach known as Challenge By Choice is upheld whereby participants choose to what extent and to what capacity they will participate in the activities offered.
As a branch of the Master's in Experiential Education program at MSU, the Adventure Education Program fosters personal growth through adventure-based experiences for MSU students and other members of the greater surrounding community, while simultaneously enhancing graduate education through provision of facilitation experiences for Experiential Education Master's students.
