Professional Liability Insurance is for your protection and is required as you matriculate through the professional education program at Minnesota State Mankato. During the professional education courses and field experiences, you may encounter situations which could involve legal actions in which you could be held personally liable for damages. Professional liability insurance will provide protection for the vast majority of lawsuits and is mandatory before you enter professional education and the K-12 classroom. All teacher candidates are expected to provide evidence-documentation of professional liability during the semester in which they are applying for professional education and continuation. Failure to do so will result in a professional communication.
How do I obtain professional liability insurance?
One method of obtaining professional liability insurance is through student membership in Education Minnesota and remaining in good standing throughout your professional education program. The basic student membership is for the period September 1, to August 31, of the following year. With this membership you will receive $1,000,000.00 of professional liability insurance.
If you choose this method you do not need to provide evidence of professional liability insurance to the Advising Office (Armstrong Hall 117).
What do I do if I already have or select another provider of professional liability insurance?
If you choose to provide documentation of another type of professional liability, remember, a typical homeowner's insurance policy does not have a professional liability clause. This would be an additional rider to your policy. Please check with your insurance provider prior to submitting your documentation. Teacher candidates who already have or select another provider of professional liability insurance will need to submit a copy to the Advising office (Armstrong Hall 117) for verificaion.
