Developmental Disabilities Education

All students working toward a developmental disabilities teaching degree must be admitted to professional education prior to enrollment in BLOCK 1 coursework.

Application to Professional Education should be made when the following requirements have been met:

  1. Completion of 40 semester credit hours
  2. A minimum 2.75 Cumulative GPA
  3. English Composition 101 (minimum "C" grade)
  4. General Education mathematics requirement (minimum "C" grade)

Application to Professional Education consists of four steps. These steps do not need to be completed in the following order; they need only be completed before the application deadline.

Step 1: Download the Application to Professional Education

Download and complete the [PDF] online application (45 KiB). Computers in the ACC and Memorial Library have the Adobe program.

Step 2: Provide Praxis I Test Evidence

  1. If you have taken the Praxis I test and have received your scores, the Academic Advising Office (AH 117) has evidence and will activate your file.
  2. If you have taken the Praxis I test, but you have not received your scores yet, bring your test scores to the Academic Advising Office when you receive your scores by mail. Your file will then be activated.
  3. If you have not taken the Praxis I test, register online to take it. Bring the electronic registration receipt to the Academic Advising Office (AH 117), and your file will be activated. Once you receive your scores by mail, bring them to the Academic Advising Office.

Note: Praxis study guides are available at the campus bookstore or Barnes and Noble. MSU Mankato's College of Education students have a 97% passing rate within the first two attempts.

Step 3: Attend a Writing Assessment Lab

During the Writing Assessment lab, you will complete a timed essay and a 50-minute diagnostics skills test, both online. Your essay and diagnostic skills test will be corrected. The results may be used to refer you to the Center for Academic Success for assistance with your writing and as a result, delay your admission into Professional Education.

You will be registered for the lab through your SPED 541 or the appropriate pre-block course in the DCD program (could be pre-block courses 330, 408, 409). You will need to purchase Criterion Software card (may be purchased at Barnes and Noble bookstore). Writing lab times and locations:

Step 4: Complete online survey

This 15-minute survey provides valuable data for the College of Education. Please answer "adequate" for those questions that may not apply to you presently (i.e., student teaching). You will need to note the following instructions before you access the survey URL provided.

  1. Enter 8-digit student ID number and pin number
  2. Under Surveys, click on "Take Survey."
  3. When you have completed the survey, click "Submit."
  4. To access the survey click https://secure.mnsu.edu/coe/assessment/

Faculty Review

The completed application packet is forwarded to the Developmental Disabilities Education department for faculty review. Successful applications receive a departmental recommendation for admission. The Academic Advising Office enters permissions for designated Professional Education coursework.

Communication of Concern

A process is in place for faculty and K-12 practitioners to report concerns about student academic proficiencies and professional behaviors. Student assistance plans may be developed in response to these concerns.

Variance

The purpose of the variance process is to allow students who are in extraordinary circumstances to appeal one or more performance expectations or policies. As part of the process the student provides a rationale of why the expectations should be modified in his/her case. The variance process is not meant to replace the role of the department chairperson in approving substitutions and waivers.

The variance process requires students to complete the form, including a written explanation that is attached. A current transcript should also be included.

Variance requests are to be turned into the department office if the issue is a department concern. Otherwise, the request is to be turned into AH 118.

The Professional Education Review Board will consider the case and inform the student of the decision. A request does not guarantee the student will be granted the variance.
