Description of the Lesson:

The following classroom guidance lesson was developed at Maple River West Elementary School by Sandy Sawatzky (Professional School Counselor).  This lesson is designed to show elementary-aged children (grades 2-3) the different careers that use different tools.

Purpose:

To learn that many careers use many different tools.

Learner Outcomes:

Students will be able to identify careers that use different tools.

Students will be able to identify many different career options.

Students will be able to identify that many tools are used for many different careers.

Materials:

Objects that different careers can use: ruler, shovel, hammer, stethoscope, etc.

Chalk or Dry Erase Board

Bag or box to put the objects in

Introduction:

The counselor begin the lesson by talking to the students about the many tools that are used by many different careers.  The counselor may hold a tool up for the class to see and have the class brainstorm which careers use that tool.  For example, teachers, construction workers, and architects all use a ruler.  Have them come up with several different careers related to the tool before moving on.

Activity:

Have the students divide into two groups of students.  Each group stands in a line facing the counselor who is standing by the chalk/dry erase board.  The counselor pulls a tool out of a bag or box and holds it up for the students to see.  The instructions are given that when it is the studentsÕ turn, they must name a career that uses that tool.  If answers are repeated, the student is sent back to their chair.  If a student says, Òa person who does. . . this,Ó they are sent back to their chair.  Students must name an actual career that uses the tool.  Do this until there is only one person left.  Have this person pick a new tool out of the bag/box and all the students are invited back to participate in the next game.  Do this with several tools.

Closure:

The counselor has everyone take their seats and asks the students if they can remember 4-5 of the careers from each object used.  The counselor writes these on the chalk/dry erase board.  Then the counselor points to the careers and talks about how different tools can be used for many careers.

Connections to Related Standards, Competencies, and Domains:

This lesson is reflective of the Career Domain of the Minnesota School CounselorÕs Model of Developmental Guidance and Counseling.  This lesson is an introduction to a career unit with second or third graders that teaches them the use of different tools in different careers.
