Title of Lesson: Personality Interests
Description of the Lesson:
The following classroom guidance lesson was developed at Mankato East High School by Janell Sipe (School Counseling Intern) and Steve Schultz (Graduate student in the School Counseling program). This lesson was designed to meet the Graduation Standard 3501.0467, learning area eight, decision-making/career exploration for the 9th grade.
Learner Outcomes:
Students will be able to identify personality types. Students will understand how people in various vocations have similar personalities. Students will identify personality types and vocations that appear similar. Students will explore career and educational options to make informed decisions for future life choices by: Determining areas of individual interest and ability.
Materials:
Deserted Island Exercise – transparency
Construction paper
Tape
Marker
Activity:
Counselor will read through exercise, encouraging students to think about the group they identify the most with. After reading the exercise ask the students to move to the letter that best describes them (hang the letters R, A, I, S, E, C around the room). Have the students identify occupations that fit with the letter they have chosen to stand by. Encourage class discussion on how the careers they identified for their letter may also fit into other letters on the walls.

This developmental guidance lesson relates to the Minnesota Graduation Standard, 3501.0467, preparatory content standards in learning area eight: Decision-making – Career Exploration. This lesson also fits in the Personal and Social Domain of the Minnesota Model of Developmental Guidance and Counseling.
