Description of Lesson-

This lesson was made out of the request from the 10th grade health teacher.  He wanted another voice to be heard by his students in support of his own message on drugs, the effects they have on lives, and some prevention strategies.  The school counselor and I made an informative power point presentation that accompanied an interactive classroom discussion and a past user willing to describe her experience.  The lesson was used in a 90-minute block health class.  Of course adjustments could be made to have it span two class periods or narrow in on a certain drug.  Nicotine, Marijuana, and club drugs are described extensively with brief mention of alcohol use.

The lesson was organized as such. (The power point is available as well.)

Connections to Related Standards, Competencies, and Domains

The Minnesota High Standards Areas that would be explored by this lesson include learning area 8, Individual and Community Health and learning area 5, Issues Analysis.  One could look to touch on either one or both of these areas.  It depends on the direction the counselor or instructor wants to lead the students.

The domains of the Minnesota School CounselorsŐ Model of Developmental Guidance and Counseling that are reflected in the lesson are the Personal and Social and Academic domains.  A portion of the lesson deals with making good and informed decisions that relate to the academic domain.  The personal and social domain is extensively covered with because it deals with understanding self, personal responsibilities, and positive decision making skills.

The Career Development Competencies by Area relates to the lesson in the areas of Self-Knowledge and Educational and Occupational Exploration.  The Self-Knowledge area is covered by the lesson when understanding the influence of positive self-concept and understanding the growth and development.  The area of Educational and Occupational Exploration is looked at by the lesson when understanding the need for positive attitudes toward work and learning.  By leading the discussion and lesson in such a way that these areas are focused on would ensure the success of them.
