How
the Skills are used in the Company is
a lesson found at www.iu5.org
for high school students. The
lesson is designed to help students gain an understanding of what an employer
expects of an employee, what makes a good employee, and how important having a
positive attitude on the job is.
The lesson takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour to teach. Materials for the lesson include
cards/text that contain the information of Ò What Do Employees Expect of Me as
an Employee?Ó Also, pencils and
paper for group work. The
cards/text can be found at www.iu5.org website. See reference for the web address for
this lesson plan.
The lesson begins by the
teacher or counselor reviews the definition of attitude with the class.
Next, the teacher/counselor explains the importance of being productive
on the job. Now, the
teacher/counselor asks students to list qualities that they feel are important
to being productive on the job.
Next, students get in pre-established work groups. In the groups, students compile a group
list of good employee qualities.
Next, the teacher/counselor has the
groups narrow down their list to the ten most important qualities of a good
employee. Also, group members pick
one person in each group to be the recorder. Now, the teacher has the recorder from each group tell their
top five answers to the rest of the class. Lastly, the teacher/counselor passes out and explains the
cards that contain the information of ÉWhat Do Employers Expect of Me as an
Employee? Students can then
compare their list with the ones listed on the cards.
This lesson on employer expectations relates to the High Standards number 8 (Physical Education and Lifetime Fitness). The specific standard is under Occupational Experience. Students are taught about employer expectations so they can learn to make good decisions in the workplace.
