Developmental Guidance Lesson Plan
Grade Level: (9-12)
Time: Four, One hour a Week Lessons
Objective: Students will go through a mock interview to improve and exercise their interviewing skills.
Introduction: Explain to the classroom that this is a four-week unit concentrating on interviewing skills. Ask the class to raise their hands is they have ever had an interview. Ask for some volunteers to tell about the experience.
Procedure: Week one complete the introduction to the unit. Go over interview dos and donŐts in interviewing. Week two give the class examples of resumes. Have them start on their own resume. Week three have the students pick a job of their choice that they would like to apply for. Finish resumes, and go over some basic interviewing skills. Week four will be the mock interviews. The interviewers could be teachers who are in their prep time, or one could bring in employers from the community.
Activity: The mock interviews are the core of this unit. Students will actually get to experience a real interview. The student will bring a copy of their resume with them to the interview.
Assessment: Students will write a thank you letter to the person with whom they interviewed. Students will also write a one-page reaction paper to the interview including a copy of their resume and turn it into you within one week of their interviews.
Closure: Return the reaction papers to the students. Thank the students and the teachers for letting you come into their classroom and complete the unit.
Resources: When I was a senior I had a class where this was part of the curriculum. I benefited from this experience. I know all schools do not do this therefore I feel this is a great unit for a counselor to administer. Interviewing is important and worthy of teaching students. It is a life skill.
