á      What classes do you enjoy?

á      Write down ten things you are good at and that you like to do right now.

-cross off any items you would not like to do in 10 years

II.             What values are important to you?

á      Things I value now.

á      Things I might value as an adult.

KEY WORDS:  travel, money, outdoors, health, service, meeting people, marriage, home, adventure, art , spirituality

 

III.           In what direction might you go?

á      What kind of jobs/career paths fit with your values and interests?

Using the handout for research suggestions, look up some careers that relate to your interests, talents, and values.  Choose 3 careers and write why you chose the career, how much money you could earn, and the job outlook in Minnesota.

 

IV.           What path will you take to get there?

á      Choose two careers that interest you.

á      Find two higher education institutions that offer programs for that career, how much each program costs per year, and the phone number for the school.

 

V.             Who will help you?

á      List five different people you could contact about this career.

Include name, phone number, and job title.

 

VI.           What can you do now?

á      Talk to your guidance counselor or teachers

á      Talk to a person in your career fields

á      Talk to a professor or instructor in your career fields

á      Search for scholarship and financial aid opportunities

á      Look up people who are experts in the area

 

 

 

Connections to Related Standards, Competencies, and Domains

 

            This lesson specifically relates to learning area eight in career investigation. Students will determine person interest, aptitude, and abilities.  They will establish a career action plan, including a program that meets their desired goals.  They will also investigate a career through research and evaluate the appropriateness of the career based on life goals and personal attributes.

            This lesson also relates to the Career Development Competencies by Area and Level.  It focuses on educational and occupational exploration by engaging student in career exploration.  It will develop the skills to locate, evaluate, and interpret career information.  By researching a variety of careers, students will have the skills to search, and the ability to set future career goals.
