Sample Guidance Lessons

The following sample guidance lessons are the work of interns in the Professional School Counseling Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. They were completed in collaboration with their site supervisors. Inquiries related to these lessons may be directed to the individual site supervisors identified as responsible for a specific lesson. Interns, of course, are now gainfully employed at school districts across the state and nation! The MSU Mankato Professional School Counseling Program is proud of the site supervisors who shared these lessons with our interns.

Efforts have been made to categorize each guidance activity by grade level. Elementary and Middle School lessons may be found in both categories, particularly if an activity is relevant for the upper elementary grades. In Phase 1 (2000-2002) and with submissions through 2003, each lesson made efforts to show connections with the Minnesota Graduation Rule (the Profiles of Learning). With the abolishment of those standards, Phase 2 entries most likely make no reference to any Minnesota graduation standards since new ones were adopted in 2004. The lessons do make note of the connections with specific Minnesota School Counselors Association Model of Developmental Guidance and Counseling domains and the American School Counselors Association National Model. As new state standards are implemented (most likely tied to the federal No Child Left Behind requirements), efforts will be made to tie these lessons to those standards.

Phase 3 is slated for the spring of 2007.
