The Master of Science in Educational Leadership provides a flexible background for those who wish to tailor their program for a specific purpose, as well as for those who wish to have a broad background.
A 34–credit program includes only graduate level courses, which are 500 and 600 level classes.
13 of the 34 credits include 9 required credits in the Leadership Core, 3 required credits in Research, and 1–3 credits in Project Demonstration.
11 of the 34 remaining credits may be taken from any of the classes in the Educational Leadership Department. That includes any courses with a prefix of Educational Leadership (K–12), Educational Leadership, and Experiential Education.
10 of the 34 remaining credits may be taken either in the department or from other departments at MSU, Mankato. Or, they may be taken at other accredited institutions and transferred to our university. Students should check with their advisor about the latter process.
The Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership is a 30–credit program. It is for those with a Master's Degree not pursuing administrative licensure in the K–12 system. It offers flexibility for the graduate student and emphasizes Leadership skill development and a research component.
This degree does require a second level research course, generally the Seminar in Field Study Design. After the course is completed students may begin the Thesis or Project Demonstration requirement for the Specialist Degree.
