 Middle-school (Grade 5-8) Minors/Licensure Endorsements

Minnesota State Mankato, through the Elementary Education program, is approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching to recommend candidates for MN Middle School (Grades 5-8) in Communication Arts & Literature, Mathematics, and/or Science licensure endorsements. Teachers, or teacher candidates, who have, or are earning a MN K-6 license, are eligible to pursue these particular endorsements. Teachers, or teacher candidates, who have MN 7-12 or 9-12 licenses with content expertise, need to work through our K-12/Secondary Education Department (KSP), with respect to licensure requirements and pursuit of a Middle-school endorsement. Teachers and candidates are also required by the MN Board of Teaching to successfully pass all Minnesota Teacher Licensure Exams (MTLE) that are affiliated with a particular license/endorsement - the Middle School areas traditionally require two separate exams for each licensure area:

All courses listed with an “EEC” prefix are courses affiliated with teaching pedagogy of middle-school and are offered by the EEC Department, in summer semester (May/June), 100% online. Associated content course offerings vary by sponsoring department. Contacting those departments specifically will provide insight into their future course schedules as well as formats for offering:

Some of the 100 and 200-level courses within the various disciplines may also be taken at a 2-year Community College and transferred to Minnesota State Mankato. The official “ Equivalency Guide” that helps crosswalk courses at Minnesota State Mankato to a large number of 2-year CC’s can be found at: http://www.mnsu.edu/admissions/equivalency/. First, choose the 2-year school to view the crosswalk, then select the program that you desire to crosswalk specifically, as an example, “ Math 112” at Minnesota State Mankato is equivalent to Normandale Community College’s Math 2200 and Minnesota State Mankato’s Math/Stats 154 is equivalent to NCC’s Math 2150.

The Board of Teaching requires that all candidates adding a middle level endorsement to an existing license complete a four-week practicum at either grades 5-6 (for teachers who hold a secondary license) or grades 7-8 (for teachers who hold an elementary license). EEC 451 Middle Level Practicum is designed to allow candidates to meet this licensure requirement.
