Elementary Education Roadmap

How do I know when to apply for admission through each gate?

Check the number of credits you have. Prepare your application the semester before you anticipate having enough credits.

Admission to the Major

English 101: grade of A or B

Do I have to apply for any courses before the Blocks?

Block 1 and Block 2

Block 1 Requirements

  2. Completion of General Education requirements

Admission to Block 1 is competitive and is based on GPA and completion of program requirements up to Block 1. Minimum GPA is 2.75, but admission is dependent on the rest of the applicant pool.

What can I do to improve my chances of being accepted into Block 1?
  • Complete all requirements for the general program, as well as your specialty area.
  • Retake courses that may be lowering your GPA.
  • Stay informed of application deadlines.

Block 2 Requirements

  1. Minimum 2.75 GPA
  2. Completion of General Education requirements
  3. Completion of specialty area requirements
  4. Successful completion of Block 1 clinical experience
  5. Successful completion of Block 1 coursework

Continuance into Block 2 is not automatic, but rather based on successful completion of all requirements in Block 1, including student teaching, and a positive recommendation of dispositions by Block 1 faculty.

What can I do to improve my chance of being accepted into Block 2?
  • Perform exceptionally well in my clinical experience.
  • Successfully complete all courses in Block 1.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in the way I interact and communicate with faculty, peers, elementary students and teachers.
