The program is designed for teachers who already have an existing classroom teaching license and wish to deepen their knowledge of reading. Completion of the 18 credit program and the state licensure exam would make you eligible for the K-12 Reading Teacher licensure endorsement.
Students can begin the program any semester. We ask that students complete an application to Graduate Studies along with two recommendations (the form is on our website under admissions) as part of the admissions process. There is no exam required for admission.
The program is all online and done at the student's convenience. There is not a set time when you need to be online each week. We use readings, discussion, videos and applied assignments in the courses. There is a practicum that calls for students to do testing and tutoring of an individual student.
This on-line program provides students with knowledge and experience in best practices in reading instruction and assessment, as well as administration of reading programs. Students can emerge as leaders in reading improvement and meeting NCLB requirements in their districts. Admission to the College of Education's Literacy Program can be done as a degree-seeking student by being a part of a Master's program, licensure, or certificate .

The standards for the Reading Teacher licensure will be changing this fall. Candidates have until the end of August 2012 to complete the program under the current standards and courses. Fall, 2010 is the first offering of coursework for candidates joining under the new standards. (There are not a lot of changes, but there are some differences in coursework.) The other change will be the test. The state will have the Praxis test available this summer and then it will not be used. Starting September 1st, the Pearson test will be available. That test can be used for either the current or new standards. Passing scores from either test will be accepted until August 31, 2012. For specific information on these changes please click here.
