Throughout the program, candidates will be taking courses within the program, content courses, as well as completing field experiences. The time involved is demanding. Participation in field experiences and student teaching requiresa considerable commitment of time from the candidates, with student teaching being a full-time obligation. Often candidates must plan to take a leave of absence from their employment to participate in the field experiences and complete student teaching. Candidates receive no compensation for field experiences or student teaching and should make allowances for the loss of income.
Note: An evaluation of your content coursework is critical in determining whether the weekend or Tuesday night cohort is correct for you. The weekend cohort is designed for candidates that are deficient in approximately 9 -12 credits in their content area and can schedule the courses prior to student teaching. If you have more than 12 credits of deficiencies the Tuesday night cohort could be a better route. Although the Tuesday night cohort may take one to two additional semesters, it does provide an opportunity to address deficiencies in the content area. Our desire at MSU is to provide the best option for each candidate in obtaining a teaching license while maintaining a quality program.
