Master of Science Degree

All students must complete the 3 Research Core Courses (see below).  Additionally, all of the  courses completed as part of the EBD licensure/certificate program (see below) can be applied towards the 34 graduate level credits required for the Master's Degree in Special Education. 

Special Education Core Courses (17 credits)

  • SPED 619 Education of Students with Mild Disabilities (4)
  • SPED 639 Transition Planning for Students w/ Mild Disabilities (3)
  • SPED 645 Formal and Informal Clinical Procedures (3)
  • SPED 646 Instructional Interventions (4)
  • SPED 661 Special Education Law (3)

Courses Required for EBD Licensure/Certificate (10 credits)

  • SPED 657 Emotional/Behavior Disorders: Program Design and Implementation (4)
  • SPED 658 Seminar: Current Issues and Trends EBD (3)
  • SPED 667 Graduate Student Teaching: EBD (3)

*EBD students who are Initial Teacher Licensure candidates can use any of the 16 credits required for Initial Teacher Licensure (see below) towards the 34 graduate level credits required for the master's degree.

Courses Required for Initial Teacher Licensure (16 credits)

  • SPED 509: Learning and Human Development for Diverse Learners (4)
  • SPED 511: Differentiation and Accommodation in an Inclusive Classroom (4)
  • SPED 513: Professional Growth and Development (4)
  • SPED 514: Literacy Methods in an Inclusive Classroom: Diverse Learners (4)

Research Core Courses (7 credits)

All coursework for the Master's must be completed before taking the Research Core courses. The courses must also be taken in the sequence listed and cannot be taken simultaneously

  • SPED 600: Introduction to Educational Research (3)
  • SPED 610: Using Educational Research (3)
  • SPED 694: Preparing Capstone Project (1)
