Expanded Edition

Special Education Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Licensure Program for Students with Degrees Outside of Education

Expanded Edition is a program designed for students with BS or BA degrees in areas outside of education who wish to pursue K-12 special education licensure in the areas of Learning Disabilities or Emotional Behavioral Disorders.

Participants can earn a Certificate which leads to licensure in either EBD or LD. Participants also have the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in these two areas.

Admission Criteria

All candidates must submit the following:

  1. A completed application form (the standard university application formCrequired by the graduate college).
  2. Official college transcripts. (required by the graduate college and provides information about previous course work and degrees).

To be admitted to the EBD or LD Certificate program:

Candidates must have a GPA above 2.5 from the most recent 2 years of study.

To be upgrade to the Masters of Science program:

To upgrade to the Masters program, students must complete 15 credits or required coursework with a GPA of 3.2 or above. Applicants can then upgrade to the Masters program. No more than 10 credits from another accredited university into a Masters program.

II. Prerequisites Course for Special Education

  • SPED 548 (4 cr) Behavior Management
  • SPED 605 (3 cr) Individuals w/ Exceptional Needs

III. Special Education Core Courses Required for EB/D & LD Certificate/Licensure

  • SPED 619 Education of Students with Mild Disabilities (4)
  • SPED 639 Transition Planning for St w/ Mild Disabilities (3)
  • SPED 645 Formal and Informal Clinical Procedures (3)

To Earn a Masters Degree

For the EBD and LD licensure, students must complete all course work up to and including the student teaching requirements. Masters candidates must then complete the research requirements and the Capstone Project. The required courses for each program are listed below:

* All summer courses are held on the MSU campus in Mankato, Minnesota. All other course are offered once a week in the evenings and can be taken at either the Burnsville site or the Mankato campus.

Praxis I and Praxis II tests are required for a Minnesota special education teaching license - Please be aware that the Praxis II is two separate tests, the Special Education Content Knowledge Exam and the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam.
