MAVERICK STUDENT TEACHER
While there are many career choices, few offer the gratification found in teaching. Few offer a better opportunity to make a profound, positive impact on children. Few offer the chance to make a more important contribution to your community.
Experts estimate that 50 percent of America’s K-12 teachers will retire in the next 10 years, driving the need for 2 million new teachers. The US Department of Labor projects that education will account for 16 percent of all job openings in 2018, and there will be roughly two openings for every qualified candidate in education. The demand for math, science and language teachers will be even stronger – if you enjoy those subjects, your opportunities will be boundless.
In 1868, Minnesota State Mankato began as a teachers college. For the next 50 years, training teachers was literally all we did. We are still one of the top producers of teaching talent in Minnesota, and education remains the most popular major at the university.
In our College of Education, you will work with excellent faculty who are passionate and fully committed to making you the best teacher you can possibly be. We're also transforming the way in which teachers develop and grow their skills to ensure career success. You’ll find innovative team-teaching programs that connect you with veteran teachers and mentors, working in real classrooms for up to a year. You’ll also find unique post-graduate support designed to ensure your success in those critical early years as a teacher.
Students who join us in the next few years will be on the cutting edge of education in Minnesota, benefiting from our lead role in the NExT (Network for Excellence in Teaching) program, a $40 million partnership supported by Bush Foundation to transform teacher training in Minnesota.
Whether you choose to teach at the elementary, junior or senior high school level, you will find the program you want at Minnesota State Mankato. If you love history or science or math or English, you’ll learn how to share your passion for those subjects as a teacher.
