Sergeant First Class (Promotable) Barnes enlisted in the Army, August 2004 and attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual training at Fort Benning, Georgia as an 11B Infantryman.

SFC Barnes held a variety of positions as an Infantryman, from Rifleman, Squad Automatic Weapons (M249) gunner, M240 Bravo Machine Gunner to Team Leader while assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. SFC Barnes also served as a Forward deployed Team Leader in support of OIF III while stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served as a Fire Team Leader and Squad Leader to include a deployment to Afghanistan in support of OEF Consolidation Phase II while stationed in Hohenfels, Germany. Upon return from his second deployment SFC Barnes was assigned and served as an Infantry One Station Unit Training Drill Sergeant and Senior Drill Sergeant at Fort Benning, Georgia. After his two year Drill Sergeant commitment, SFC Barnes was assigned to the 173rd ABN “THE ROCK” in Vicenza, Italy. While assigned to the 173rd, SFC Barnes deployed to multiple countries in support of all our NATO allies. Upon completion of his Italy assignment SFC Barnes assumed his current position as Military Science Instructor for Minnesota State ROTC.

SFC Barnes’s military education includes NCOES commensurate with his grade, Heavy Weapons Leader Course, Drill Sergeant School, Army Basic Instructor Course, Anti-terrorism Level II Course, Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, Master Resiliency Trainer Course, Urban Breach Course, Javelin Training course, Airborne School, Air Assault School and has earned his Expert Infantryman’s Badge. SFC Barnes awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Commendation Medal (6 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Achievement Medal (3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Good Conduct Medal (4 Loops), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal (1 bronze service star), Iraq Campaign Medal (2 bronze service star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Medal,  NCO Professional Development Ribbon (w/numeral 2), Overseas Ribbon (with numeral 3), NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman’s  Badge, Drill Sergeants Badge.
