Mr. Herman began his military career in 1983 by enlisting in the Minnesota Army National Guard as a Fire Direction Specialist. He commissioned through Officer Candidate School dual branched as a Signal and Field Artillery Officer where he served in that capacity from the platoon level up to division staff positions. His significant National Guard service included two battery commands and two overseas deployments. He transitioned to the United States Army Reserves after 25 years and taught officer education, Intermediate Level Education (ILE), preparing officers to function and lead as Lieutenant Colonels for the Army before retiring in 2014 from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Mr. Herman has been a part of United States Army Cadet Command since 2004 where he began teaching, coaching, and mentoring cadets in various ROTC programs as a government contractor before becoming a Department of the Army Civilian in 2018.
