Application & Program Requirements for Elementary Education

During the first two years, students complete program requirements designed to build knowledge of content across multiple disciplines. During the final two years, students are admitted into a cohort. Admission to the Elementary Education program is based upon a competitive application process that includes factors such as, professional dispositions, program course completion, and GPA. 

Admission to the Major

Requirements: All students must submit a copy of their Degree Audits (DARS). Elementary Education students must complete the following requirements to be admitted to the major: 

  1. Credits: 60 completed or in progress

  1. GPA: 3.0 cumulative 

 

Admission to Professional Education 

Requirements: All students working toward a teaching degree in the Elementary Education program must be admitted to Professional Education prior to enrollment in the program. Application to Professional Education should be made when the following requirements have been met: 

  1. Credits: 40 completed 

  1. GPA: 3.0 cumulative 

  2. Completion of or enrollment in ELE 215, 222W, and Math 201 

  3. Completion of national criminal background check 

  4. Proof of liability insurance

What is required for admissions into the Elementary Education program?

Admission to the Elementary Education program is based upon a competitive application process that includes factors such as, professional dispositions, program course completion, and GPA. While in the program students will be monitored for: 

  1. Successful completion of coursework 
  2. Successful completion of field experiences 
  3. A cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher 
  4. Evaluation of professional dispositions 
  5. Completion and validation of application materials one year prior to student teaching semester. 
  6. Completion of National Criminal Background Check. 

*Elementary Education students must pass all courses with a grade of C or better and maintain a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA. In efforts to make our program more inclusive, students can request exceptions to the admission requirements through the variance process. Please contact the COE Advising Office for more information. 

When do I apply for the Elementary Education program?

For the Mankato cohort, you can apply each semester for program starting the next semester.

For the Twin Cities cohort, you can apply in the Spring for Fall program start. 

How do I apply for the Elementary Education program?

The application opens on September 5, 2023 for Spring 2024 program start. This application is for the Mankato program. Priority consideration deadline is September 29, 2023 at 11:59p.m. You may apply after the deadline to still be considered.
