The Minnesota State University, Mankato Special Education program is prepared to fully partner with Minnesota School Districts in preparing future Special Education teachers who will serve your students, families, and communities at a high level.

Pathways to Teaching

Whether your future Special Education teachers possess a high school diploma, some post-secondary credits, an associate degree, or a bachelor's degree in an area other than education, our undergraduate and graduate program will prepare candidates to earn their degree and initial teacher licensure in special education and to become Tier 3 educators.

Key Aspects:

  • Student-Centered, Real-Life Special Education Teacher Preparation
    • Focus on the connection between research and applicable skills
  • Undergraduate Academic Behavioral Strategist (ABS) License
    • Fully Online
      • Meets the need to work full-time while gaining a degree/licensure
      • Synchronous and asynchronous learning
      • Established partnerships with two-year community colleges for student-friendly transfer pathways
  • Graduate Level Degree and Initial Licensure for:
    • ABS, ECSE, ASD, EBD, DD, or SLD
    • Fully online (Asynchronous learning)


Special Education Pipeline Grant

The College of Education and Special Education program have successfully and meaningfully partnered with PreK-12 School Districts to grow and develop Teachers through Grow Your Own grant applications.

Key Aspects:

  • Comprehensive Admission processes
  • Special Education specific advising to support students throughout their degree and licensure
  • Affordable tuition to provide more grant funds to more future teachers
  • Financial Aid experience with grant funded tuition and fee payments
